**Auxiliary Verbs (Helping Verbs)**
Auxiliary verbs are also called **helping verbs**.
ஆக்ஸிலிரி வெர்ப் என்பது என்ன ?
They are small verbs.
They help the main verb (the main action word).
They give full meaning of a sentence.
They tell about the time of the action. What are they ?
Past tense, Present Tense, Future Tense.
Why We use auxiliary verbs ?
- to ask Questions:
- I like ice cream. → Do you like ice cream? (Question)
- She plays chess. → Does she play chess?
- They went to the park. → Did they go to the park?
- to say negative sentences (like "no" or "not")
- I **do** not like ice-cream . → (Negative – don't = do not)
- He **does** not tell lies. (doesn't = does not)
- She **did** not come yesterday. (didn't = did not)
- to tell about continuous actions
- to tell about actions that end just now
- to tell about ability, permission, possibility, duty, etc.
We use "am", "is", "are" in present tense forms (I am coming = நான் வந்து கொண்டு இருக்கிறேன், வருகிறேன்,
He is coming = அவன் வந்து கொண்டு இருக்கிறான், வருகிறான், they are coming = அவர்கள் வந்து கொண்டு இருக்கிறார்கள், வருகிறார்கள்)
We use "was", "were" in past tense forms : (he was coming, they were
coming, வந்து கொண்டு இருந்தான், வந்து கொண்டு இருந்தார்கள்)
We use "do", "does" in present tense forms : (i do come நிச்சயமாக வருகிறேன் , he does come நிச்சயமாக வருகிறான் )
We use "did" in past tense forms : (i did come நிச்சயமாக வந்தேன் )
We use "have", "has" in present tense forms : (i have come நிச்சயமாக வந்திருக்கிறேன் , he has
come நிச்சயமாக வந்திருக்கிறான் )
We use "had" in past tense forms. : (they had come, நிச்சயமாக வந்திருந்தார்கள்)
2. Modal Auxiliary Verbs
These helping verbs tell us about :
ability (முடியுமா) = can, could ,
permission
(அனுமதி), possibility (நடக்குமா) = may, might
duty (கடமை) = shall, should
advice (அறிவுரை) = must
strong
necessity (அவசிய தேவை) = - will, would.
**Examples**:
- I **can** swim very well. நீந்த முடியும் → (ability)
- **Can** you help me with this sum? உதவி செய்ய முடியுமா → (request / permission)
- She **could** solve the puzzle last year. செய்ய முடிந்தது → (ability)
- **May** I go to the toilet, ma’am? போகலாமா → (permission)
- It **might** rain this evening. மழை பெய்யலாம் → (small possibility)
- We **will** win the match tomorrow! வெல்வோம் → (future)
- **Would** you like some tea? டீ வேண்டுமா → (polite offer)
- You **should** respect your elders. மதிக்க வேண்டும் → (advice / duty)
- Students **must** wear uniform in school. அணிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும் → (strong rule /
necessity)
